Dinos in the Kitchen
Adobe Photoshop and After Effects
Meet Dina Deinonychus and Belle Brachiosaurs!
Both characters were drawn in Photoshop and animated using the puppet tool in After Effects. The section where Dina looks back and then turns around is actually a segment that I hand drew frame-by-frame with a quick transition between the left facing puppet animation file and the right facing puppet animation file.
I edited the footage in After Effects in order to delete out the frames where the potato was sailing into the sink in order to get the perfect splash. In Photoshop I used both the Spot Healing Brush tool and the Clone Stamp tool to edit out the string that was pulled to lift the handle and turn on the sink.
Jaina and Delilah
Adobe Photoshop and After Effects
Meet Jaina the Cat and Delilah the mouse!
Both characters were drawn in Photoshop and animated using the puppet tool in After Effects. The idea behind this animation was to experiment with subtle realistic motion. For example, the consistent expanding and contracting of Jaina's lungs can be seen throughout the video. There are two movements in the opening of the eye: the eyelid moving and the eye itself moving to look to her left. There are also subtle flicks in Delilah's tail as she runs.
At least five puppet points were placed around the edge of Jaina's left ear alone to animate the ear twitch in addition to the points placed around the edge of her face to hold it steady and isolate the motion. Points were meticulously placed along her spine, chest, leg, and tail, as well as Delilah's legs, tail, head, and whiskers. The eye opening was done with showing and hiding multiple layers, stretching these layers, stretching the face, and masking/arranging the layers so that the eye and its motion would show through the gap.
Just a Walk in the Park
Adobe Photoshop and After Effects
The goal for this animation was to tell a story using more than one scene. I decided to really push myself and attempt a first person animation since I'm comfortable drawing hands.
The hands were drawn frame by frame with references. The trees and various scene parts were drawn and Photoshop then composited and animated in After Effects. I experimented with stretching, size adjustments, foreshortening, communicating an idea without verbal cues, and motion through a scene. I'm proud of the transition between these two scenes, especially the rotation from the tree tops to seeing the UFO, as well as the pan down into the room.
